My First Gallery Submission for Black History Month ✨🖤👩🏾‍💻

Black History Month is here, and for the first time ever, I have artwork featured in a gallery. 🎨🖼️ This is something I never expected to happen, and honestly, I’m still processing it.

It all started when my professor told me to submit artwork for my college’s Black History Month gallery. At first, I wasn’t sure—I don’t consider myself someone who can draw, but I do explore other creative media. 🎭📸 Still, having a professor recognize my work and encourage me to put it out there felt like a big deal. So, I decided to go for it.

I submitted two pieces: one is a self-portrait made with collage and mixed media, and the other is an AI-generated piece created for a blog post celebrating Black History Month. 🖌️🖼️ The self-portrait is actually from my last semester’s class, which focused on collage and mixed media. That class was so much fun, but also exhausting—cutting and layering all those pieces took forever. ✂️😩 My thumb still hurts from all that work! Both pieces represent different aspects of how I approach art—experimenting, trying new things, and finding ways to express myself beyond traditional drawing.

I haven’t actually seen my artwork in the gallery yet since it opened yesterday while I was in Art History class—one of the classes taught by the same professor who encouraged me to submit. 🏫📖 In the middle of class, she explained how the exhibit was put together rather quickly, but she made it clear that anyone could join if they wanted to—no pressure. It wasn’t mandatory, just optional, but she specifically encouraged me to do it since I’m a graphic design student. ✍🏾💻 She also pointed out that having my work in a gallery would be a great addition to my portfolio.

I was planning to go see my artwork in the gallery after class, but now all classes have been moved to remote due to the weather. ❄️🥶 Apparently, it’s supposed to be extremely slippery with ice, up to two inches of snow, and ridiculously cold and windy. 🌬️🧊 But of course, there’s still class on Zoom—gotta love college. 🎧😂

Seeing my work in the gallery is surreal. It’s a reminder that creativity isn’t limited to one skill or one medium. 🎨✨ It’s about making something that speaks to you and, hopefully, to others. This was a first for me, but maybe it won’t be the last.

For anyone hesitant about sharing their work—just go for it. You never know where it might take you. 💡🙌🏾

This woman right here is Black history. 🏆✊🏾
