The Origin of Black History Month (Feb 1st – Kickoff Post) ✊🏾
🖤 Black History Month: Why We Celebrate ✊🏾
Black history isn’t just history—it’s the foundation of everything. From the way we innovate, create, and fight for change, Black excellence has shaped the world in ways that can’t be erased. That’s why February is OUR month.
But let’s be real—Black history is year-round.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” started Negro History Week in 1926, choosing February to honor the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln (since Black people had long celebrated Douglass’s birthday). By 1976, it became Black History Month, recognized nationally.
Fast forward to today, and we still have to remind people that Black history is more than slavery and the civil rights movement. It’s about our inventions, culture, resilience, and joy—things that some try to erase but can never take away.
📢 So this month, I’m dedicating Awkwardly Introverted to ALL things Black history.
From the icons you know to the ones they don’t teach in school, from historical moments to modern-day excellence, we’re covering it ALL.
Drop a ✊🏾 if you’re ready. Let’s get into it. #BlackHistoryMonth
