The Power of Voting: Why Every Voice Matters, Even After a Felony Conviction

Image
Today, I proudly cast my vote πŸ—³️ for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, ready to contribute to the change I believe this country needs. But as I made my way to the polling station, I couldn’t help but think about the importance of this right and how it's unfairly stripped away from so many Americans due to felony disenfranchisement. Voting isn’t just a privilege—it’s a fundamental right. And yet, millions of people are shut out of the democratic process because of past mistakes. There’s a lot of misinformation around this topic, especially in my own family. I’ve heard relatives say they can’t vote because of a felony conviction, when in reality, in many states, that’s simply not true. Let’s break it down. What is Felony Disenfranchisement? Felony disenfranchisement refers to the laws that prevent individuals with felony convictions from voting. These laws vary widely from state to state, creating a confusing patchwork of policies that can be hard to navigate. In some states, your votin...

The Importance of Civic Engagement: A Call to Action for Young Voters

Image
As we approach another election season, the importance of civic engagement cannot be overstated. It’s disheartening to encounter individuals, especially those in higher education, who express apathy towards voting and the political process. Recently, a classmate who aspires to become a lawyer stated that she wouldn’t vote because she believed it didn’t affect her. This perspective is not only troubling but also indicative of a larger issue: a disconnect between personal responsibility and civic duty. Voting is a fundamental right that carries significant weight in shaping the future of our communities and society at large. Each election brings forth critical issues that can impact everything from education and healthcare to civil rights and social justice. To dismiss the act of voting as irrelevant undermines the sacrifices made by those who fought for the right to vote, particularly in marginalized communities. As a young Black woman, it is essential to recognize the power of our voic...

πŸ“š The Library’s “CAUTION” Tape Is Not What You Think… πŸ€” So, I walked into the library today, and guess what? I see caution tape wrapped around shelves of classic books. My first thought? Did I just stumble upon a crime scene involving Mark Twain and Harper Lee? 🀯 But, plot twist—it’s actually a genius way to raise awareness about something really messed up: banning books. Yeah, the library isn’t supporting this madness. They’re making a statement about the government and certain states that still think banning books is a good idea in 2024. πŸ™„ Wait, What? We’re Still Banning Books? πŸ“–πŸš« Here’s where it gets crazy: we’re in a world where anything is a click away. You can literally Google the wildest stuff imaginable (trust me, don’t), but nope, someone decided books are the enemy. 🀦🏽‍♀️ So while libraries like this one are trying to get people to think critically and read these “dangerous” books, there are still folks out there who think slapping a ban on literature will solve all t...
